Lawrence MacAulay has proudly represented the people of Cardigan for the past 20 years (2008) having run successfully in 7 election campaigns. Lawrence's first 5 years as the Member of Parliament for Cardigan were spent in Opposition during the last mandate of Brian Mulroney from 1988 to 1993. He was the fisheries critic and was given responsibility to represent the views of seniors to the 34th Parliament.
By 1993 Jean Chretien had led the Liberals back to power . Lawrence was appointed to Cabinet as the Secretary of State for Veterans Affairs, a portfolio that came to mean so much to Lawrence. He was genuinely honoured to represent the Veterans of Canada on behalf of the Government of Canada particularly during the 50th anniversary of Victory in Europe celebrations
Lawrence was appointed Secretary of State for ACOA (the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) in January 1996 while continuing with the portfolio of Veterans Affairs. Lawrence oversaw the signing of Infrastructure agreements across the region, the formation of the Atlantic Canadian Tourism Quality Council and the funding for Gateway Village through the Redevelopment Project for Bordon-Carleton.
Canadians were back at the polls in June 1997 and again Jean Chretien was elected Prime Minister. Lawrence was appointed Minister of Labour and Minister responsible for Prince Edward Island in the federal Cabinet. Lawrence served as Labour Minister from June 1997 to November 1998.
Lawrence was elected for the 5th time in November, 2001 as the Liberals were once again returned to power this time under the leadership of Paul Martin but as it turned out his minority government lasted only 18 months and once again Lawrence was back in Cardigan seeking re-election for the 6th time on January 23rd, 2006.
During the 20 years (1988) Lawrence has served as the Member of Parliament for Cardigan, his family grew up changing from little girls to professional young women all working in their related fields. Frances too, has gone from a busy teacher and mother to a welcome retirement. Each year during his 20 years as MP, Lawrence and his family have posed for a family picture for inclusion on his Christmas card ... to the left is the first Christmas card photo taken in 1988 and below is the picture taken last summer for the 2007 Christmas card.

Lawrence was sworn in as the Solicitor General of Canada on November 23rd, 1998. As the Minister responsible for the safety and security of Canadians, his tenure in this position coincided with the attacks on the World Trade Centre on September 11th ... Lawrence often shares the story that he was in Nova Scotia at the time of the attack and was immediately called back to Ottawa. During the flight, he was made aware that his plane was one of only three planes in the air over North America at that time, one of the others being the plane of President Bush.
In November 2001 Lawrence was once again for the 4th time elected the Member of Parlaiment for Cardigan. Prime Minister Chretien reappointed Lawrence Solicitor General and he remained in that position until October, 2002 when he resigned to sit as a back bench MP.
