The Riding of Cardigan has existed since 1966. Before 1966, while PEI was still represented by 4 Members of Parliament, the districts were called Kings, Queens (2 representives) and Prince.

The boundaries of Cardigan changed in 2004 to include the portion of the Hillsborough Riding (essentially the area between the Hillsborough River and the old Cardigan Riding) previously attached to the area now known as the Charlottetown Riding. Lawrence now represents the largest federal district on the Island both geographically and by population.

Stratford, the largest and most westerly town in the Cardigan Riding, was born on April 1, 1995 encompassing the communities of Bunbury, Southport, Cross Roads and Keppock-Kinlock. Stratford has become in just 10 years the third largest town on PEI and the fastest growing municipality on the "Island".

Lawrence MacAulay has represented the people of Cardigan in the Parliament of Canada since 1988. During Lawrence's six successful campaigns he promised to focus on job creation and bringing opportunity to Cardigan by working in cooperation with the people and communities of the Riding. Probably no politician has so successfully achieved his goals as has Lawrence MacAulay… from the creation of Greenwich as part of the PEI National Park, to the Matthew and McLean building in Souris, to the Addictions Research Centre in Montague, to renewal of the Northumberland Ferries contracts, to millions of dollars for infrastructure and countless community development projects...
